Yuan, meaning "broad new horizon," comes from the Chinese philosophical work, The Book of Changes,and was chosen by a Han official named Liu Bingzhong by order of the Mongol emperor Kublai.
Liu Bingzhong was one of the few Han officials of the early Yuan Dynasty accorded trust by the new governance, and this was solely by virtue of his family background.
